Inside New Lab, an 84,000-Square-Foot Tech Paradise in Brooklyn
written by

Once a bustling shipbuilding hub, Building 128 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard has been transformed into New Lab—an 84,000-square-foot innovation center. This state-of-the-art facility now houses over 350 hardware engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs working on cutting-edge projects in robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology.
Spearheaded by real-estate developers David Belt and Scott Cohen, New Lab offers a unique blend of historic architecture and modern amenities. The space features 70-foot ceilings, communal lounges adorned with greenery, and shared resources like a full metal-and-wood shop, a 3-D printing lab, and digital manufacturing tools. Original elements, such as the giant cranes once used for shipbuilding, have been preserved and repurposed, adding to the facility's distinctive character.
Designed to foster collaboration and innovation, New Lab provides designated office spaces for 50 companies, creating a vibrant community where ideas can flourish. This transformation not only revitalizes a historic structure but also positions Brooklyn as a leader in the next wave of technological advancement.
